Poem #9

"How to Love a Disappointed Parent"

I want to swing a bat
at your mouth, watch the knives
of your teeth fall like hail
on the broken sidewalk
I want to smash the glass
of your face to hear the scatter
on pavement. But I don't.
I can only clench my jaw and hold
the table's edge, white-knuckled
breath held, waiting for release--
